Treads, Risers and Nosing

Your species options: hickory, maple and two kinds of oak. Each tread is a true inch thick and 11.5 inches deep, and behind every single one we fit a brand new riser.

Tread Samples at Home

Sample treads travel in the estimator's van, so you can test different species on your lowest step and choose a color right where the stairs meet your front hall.

Quiet, Solid Steps

A step that rocks gets anchored to its stringer at the start. Our carpenter trims every tread wall to wall and locks it down with adhesive, so step three goes silent.

One Year Stair Warranty

Stair labor from our NWFA certified carpenters carries a one year guarantee. A tread that works loose before then gets snugged back down on a free return trip.

/ OUR SERVICES

Stair Carpenters Serving Boston Homes

Our carpenters rebuild stairs in Jamaica Plain Victorians, narrow South End row houses and West Roxbury colonials. Old carpet is stripped away, rocking steps get anchored, and each new tread is sized, cut, set in adhesive, fastened and colored so it blends with the hardwood upstairs.

/ RED OAK, WHITE OAK, HICKORY AND MAPLE

Wood Stair Treads and Risers

Century old city staircases are rarely square. Together we'll choose the wood, a painted or stained finish for risers and a nosing shape that suits an older house.

Red Oak Treads

Red oak takes color evenly with no blotches and pairs naturally with Dorchester hardwood.

White Oak Treads

White oak's close, cool toned grain looks especially good in a sunny Back Bay entry.

Hickory and Maple Treads

Hickory's busy grain hides scuffs from boots, and maple has a pale, quiet look in Roslindale.

Painted or Wood Risers

Painted white risers give a Charlestown stairway a timeless look, and stained risers are an option too.

Open Stairs and Return Ends

If one side of a stair has no wall, a mitered nosing turns the corner and covers that open end, as in many Beacon Hill homes.

Landing Treads

At the top or a mid flight platform, landing treads sit flush with the hallway floor in Hyde Park houses.

Floors That Flow From Your New Stairs

When the last step is set, our team can also sand the second floor hallway, install oak by the bay window, put LVP down in a finished basement, or repair a scuffed spot near the kitchen.

How much will each new step cost me?

We install each step for $60, and that price includes tread, riser, nosing, stain and carpentry. If a bookcase or dresser is in the way, moving furniture costs a flat $250.

Should I keep the treads under my carpet?

If the wood under your carpet is solid, yes. Original treads are hand sanded, colored to match your floors and sealed, for $50 each.

Is stair carpet removal included?

We confirm removal at the estimate after peeking at how the runner and pad were fastened. Our crew pulls each staple and strip of tacks before new treads go on.

How many days will my stairs take?

Most straight staircases need a day, maybe two, based on how many steps there are and whether they get stain. Your estimator gives you a clear return to use date.

Can we walk up to bed while you work?

Usually yes, carefully. A safe route stays open, and on staining days the crew marks which steps to avoid until the finish has dried completely.

Which wood holds up best on stairs?

Hickory and white oak take the most abuse when kids and dogs race up and down. Red oak is the traditional choice, and maple gives a light, modern look.

What's the payment plan for stair work?

Labor is paid when carpenters arrive to start, and materials as they're delivered. We never ask for a large deposit that sits for weeks before work begins.

Is stair work guaranteed?

Yes. Our crew members are NWFA certified as well as licensed and insured, and stair labor is backed until a year has passed. If a tread shifts, we return without charging you.
