The Last Inch of a New Floor
Pick a profile below to learn where it belongs. On the free visit we look at every door, stair and wall, check the plank thickness, and tell you which pieces your rooms really need before anything gets ordered.
Where the Floor Ends
Mannington wraps its laminate moldings in the same decor as the floor, so an end cap at a patio door or a reducer next to tile looks like part of the plank. Each one is picked by what sits on the other side.
Along the Walls
Some laminate lines come with a matching wall base, a taller trim that runs where the floor meets drywall. Quarter round can sit in front of it. In basements and mudrooms, a vinyl cove base wipes clean and never needs a fresh coat of paint.
Steps and Vinyl Plank
A floating floor still needs a solid edge on every step down and landing. Laminate step nose comes in two profiles, and vinyl plank lines carry their own T-Molding so a long hallway can expand without lifting at the seams.
One Piece, Four Jobs
Mohawk sells a vinyl 4-in-1 molding that snaps into a T-Molding, a hard surface reducer, a carpet transition or an end molding. It's 78.7 inches long and fits their floating vinyl from 2mm to 8mm thick.
Small Doorways Count Too
Mohawk asks for a T-Molding in any doorway 4 feet wide or less and in rooms 40 feet or longer. Skip it and a laminate floor can pinch at the door frame once summer humidity rolls in.
Wall Base Comes in Coils
Roppe vinyl wall base is sold in 2-1/2, 4, 4-1/2 and 6 inch heights, either in 4 foot strips or 120 foot coils. A coil means fewer seams on a long basement wall in a Westchester County, New York home.
Toe or No Toe
Cove base has a small toe that curves onto the floor and seals the corner, the usual pick over vinyl and tile. A no toe base sits straight, which some folks like over carpet where the toe would get buried.
Let the Trim Warm Up
Roppe wants its vinyl base, the room and the adhesive held between 65 and 85 degrees for 48 hours before and during the install. A cold garage in January isn't the place to store it the night before.
Matching Is Built In
Laminate moldings are wrapped in the same printed decor as the planks, so an end cap or reducer won't look like an afterthought. Mannington notes its wall base is offered only on certain laminate floors, so we check yours first.
Questions About Trim
What is an end cap molding?
It's the piece that finishes laminate where it stops, often at an exterior door or where the floor runs into carpet. On some sites you'll also see it called an end molding or a carpet transition.
Can I use wall base and quarter round together?
Yes. Mannington shows its laminate wall base with a quarter round set in front, sold as two separate pieces. The pair gives a little more coverage if the expansion gap along a wall runs wide.
Is vinyl cove base only for commercial spaces?
No, it works well in finished basements, laundry rooms and mudrooms in homes across New Jersey and Connecticut. A damp cloth is all it takes to clean, and there's no paint to chip.
Does a 4-in-1 molding work with laminate?
Mohawk sells separate 4-in-1 pieces for laminate and for vinyl, each sized for its own floor. We match the right one to the brand and thickness you picked.
Why can't floating floor trim be nailed through the planks?
Laminate and vinyl plank need to move a little with the seasons. Trim gets fastened to the subfloor, a track or the wall instead, so the floor stays free underneath.
Moldings get bundled into the same written quote as your floor.
We carry trim samples to your Rhode Island home for a side by side look.
Every end cap, step nose and wall base is set by our own installers.
Plank thickness gets measured first, so the trim fits the first time.
