The Finish Is Done Before the Boards Arrive

Prefinished boards get their stain and protective coats at the mill, where the finish is cured under controlled conditions. Once the last row is in, you can move the couch back and get on with your week.

Tap a collection to see its colors, grades and board sizes. Most of these makers don't post prices, so we write up a rate per square foot once we've measured your rooms.

Ten Collections, One Crew

From $3.29/Sq Ft material

You'll find solid 3/4 inch oak and hickory here, plus engineered lines like Graf, Villagio and Valinge that handle humidity swings better. A New Jersey split level with kids might lean toward Tulip, while a loft in New York could suit Graf rift and quartered white oak.

Why Go Prefinished

There's no sanding dust and no finish fumes drifting upstairs. The coats are baked on at the factory, so they come out even and tough, and most rooms can be used again as soon as our crew packs up.

Solid or Engineered?

Solid boards like Coastline, Appalachian and Tulip are wood all the way through and can be sanded later on. Engineered lines like Graf and Villagio put a real oak top over a stable core, which is the safer choice over radiant heat or in a damp Connecticut basement.

Those Small Grooves Between Boards

Most prefinished boards have a slight bevel on the edges, which hides tiny height differences from board to board. It's part of the look, and a vacuum with a soft brush head keeps the grooves clean.

Sheens From Matte to Glossy

Appalachian's Verita is so low in sheen it looks almost raw, while Somerset Classic High Gloss shines like an old bowling alley. Matte and satin hide scratches and paw prints best, a real plus for Massachusetts families with dogs.

Letting the Wood Settle First

Boxes rest in your home for several days before install so the boards match your home's humidity. We also check the subfloor for moisture and flatness, since a dip under prefinished wood can't be sanded out later.

Repairs Are Simple Later

If a board gets a deep gouge, a single plank can be cut out and swapped for a new one from the same run. We suggest keeping a spare box in the garage or basement for exactly that reason.

Prefinished Hardwood Questions

How much does prefinished hardwood cost?

Cabin Grade starts at $3.29/Sq Ft material, Specials at $3.69/Sq Ft, Tulip sale rates at $3.79/Sq Ft and the Somerset Builder Collection at $4.89/Sq Ft. Coastline, Appalachian, Valinge, Graf, Villagio and the Designer line are quoted in writing after we measure.

Is prefinished better than site finished hardwood?

Each has its place. Factory finished boards install quicker, with a coat cured at the mill and no smell in the house. Site finished boards end up perfectly flat with no bevels, plus a stain mixed to order, so we'll talk through both at your visit.

Can prefinished hardwood be refinished?

Solid prefinished boards can be sanded and refinished when the finish wears down, and engineered boards can usually take at least a light screen and recoat. How many full sandings an engineered floor allows depends on the thickness of its wear layer.

Is prefinished wood good for homes with pets?

A matte or wire brushed surface hides claw marks far better than a high gloss one. Hickory from Cabin Grade or Appalachian is harder than oak, and Valinge's Woodura surface is made to resist water and wear.

Which collection works over radiant heat?

Engineered boards are the usual pick over radiant heat because their layered core moves less. We'll check each maker's install guide for the line you like, so the warranty stays in place for your Rhode Island home.
