A Floor Nobody Else on the Block Has

A custom floor starts with a layout and a color, not a box off the shelf. We cut and fit herringbone, chevron and diagonal rows on site, then sand, stain and seal the whole room so it reads as one piece.

Start with a pattern below, then pick the wood and the color. Every custom job gets a layout plan and a written quote per square foot, since the cutting and fitting time changes with each design.

Patterns We Lay On Site

These layouts use solid 3/4 inch unfinished boards, so the sanding after install makes every point and joint sit flush. Herringbone is the classic look for a New York prewar apartment, while chevron gives a long hallway a sense of direction.

Factory Made Patterns and Color

Want the look without the long cutting time? Villagio makes engineered chevron boards and Versailles panels that arrive finished. If you'd rather start from raw wood, we mix and test stain colors right on your floor until the shade is right.

Borders That Frame a Room

An inlaid border in a darker or lighter wood can outline a dining room or follow the length of a hall. It works nicely around a fireplace hearth in a Connecticut colonial, and it can tie a new floor to an older one next door.

Diagonal Layouts for Odd Rooms

Running boards at 45 degrees makes a narrow room look wider and hides walls that aren't quite square. It takes more cuts and a little more wood than a straight layout, which we factor into the quote.

How Much Extra Wood a Pattern Needs

Herringbone and chevron leave more offcuts than straight boards, so we order extra to cover the waste. The exact amount depends on the room's shape, and you'll see it spelled out on the estimate.

Picking the Right Species

Red and white oak take stain evenly, which makes them the usual pick for custom colors. Maple is harder but can look blotchy under dark stain, so it's often left natural or given a lighter tone.

Mixing Old and New

Many New Jersey homes have a room or two of older strip oak. We can weave new boards into it, add a border at the doorway and finish both floors together so the transition looks planned.

Time and Planning

Patterns take longer to lay than straight rows because every board is measured and cut. We snap layout lines and dry fit the first section before nailing, so the pattern stays centered on the room.

Custom Floor Questions

How much does a custom hardwood floor cost?

It depends on the pattern, the wood and the size of the room, since herringbone and borders take more labor and more material than straight rows. We plan the layout and give you a written quote per square foot after we measure.

Is herringbone or chevron better?

Herringbone uses boards with square ends set in a zigzag, while chevron boards are cut at an angle so the ends meet in a clean point. Herringbone feels classic and busy, chevron feels more modern and calm.

Can a pattern be added to just one room?

Yes. A herringbone dining room or foyer surrounded by straight boards is a popular choice, and a border at the doorway makes the change look intentional in a Massachusetts home or anywhere we work.

Can you match a stain color from a photo?

We can get close. Screens and prints change how color looks, so we mix a few blends and brush them on your actual boards. You pick the one that looks right in your own daylight.

Do custom floors work with prefinished wood?

Factory made options like Villagio chevron and Versailles panels give a patterned look without sanding on site. Custom stain colors and inlaid borders need raw boards, since the finish goes on after install.
