Treads, Risers and Nosing

Pick from maple, hickory, or red or white oak, each shaped with a gently rounded nose. Stand at the bottom of the flight and picture walking down it with your morning coffee.

Tread Samples at Home

We arrive with a red oak and a white oak sample tread. Hold one beside your hallway floor upstairs, and we mix a custom stain so the steps blend right into the landing.

Quiet, Solid Steps

Old farmhouse stairs settle over a century. We shim and brace the stringers so each step stops squeaking, then template every tread to fit its own opening.

One Year Stair Warranty

Our stair carpenters hold NWFA certification, and Brazil Floors is licensed and insured. A tread of ours that works loose before its first anniversary is reset free.

/ OUR SERVICES

Stair Carpenters for Whately Homes

Whately has steep rear stairways in the farmhouses along River Road, enclosed flights in the capes off Haydenville Road, center hall colonials near the First Congregational Church and newer open stairs on lots up toward Mount Esther. We stiffen every step first, then scribe each oak tread snug to the walls.

Wood Stair Treads and Risers

Stairs in town run from tight farmhouse flights to wide colonial ones. Our carpenter will walk you through wood choices, riser colors and nose shapes on site.

Red Oak Treads

Red oak takes stain evenly, a natural match for the strip floors in many Whately Center capes.

White Oak Treads

White oak has a calm, tight figure and soft tan tone that brightens a front hall on North Street.

Hickory and Maple Treads

Hickory has lively, contrasting grain and takes a beating, while maple keeps a quiet, creamy look in West Whately homes.

Painted or Wood Risers

Dark treads look sharp above white risers, though many older homes on Long Plain Road keep natural oak risers.

Open Stairs and Return Ends

Exposed stair sides get mitered returns to hide the cut ends, a common fix in farmhouses along Straits Road.

Landing Treads

Up top, a landing nose cut from the same oak joins the stairs to the hallway, a detail older homes near Whately Town Hall often lack.

Matching Floors Upstairs and Down

Since the carpenters are already in your house, plenty of families add oak in a back bedroom, have the front hall sanded, or float vinyl across a cellar playroom at the foot of the stairs.

What do new treads cost for a Whately staircase?

Plan on $60 per step when we build it from new oak, which covers templating, cutting, adhesive, screws and finish. Restoring a sound existing tread is $50. Our estimator counts the flight for free, then sends you a written price.

Our farmhouse stair is steep and uneven. Can you redo it?

Yes. We shim the stringers and level each step before fitting new treads, so the flight feels firm. We can't change the pitch, but every step ends up solid and consistent.

Are the treads under our stair carpet worth saving?

Often they are. If staples and tack holes are the only damage, a sanding and new finish runs $50 per tread. Cracked or spongy treads should be swapped for new oak.

Will the stair color match our upstairs hall?

Yes. We bring red and white oak samples and blend a custom stain beside your upstairs hallway floor, so the whole climb looks like a single run of wood.

How long is our only staircase out of commission?

A typical flight takes two to three days including finish. We can leave a path or do half the width at a time if the stair is the only way upstairs.

Do painted risers or oak risers look better?

Painted white risers are popular with dark treads and make each step easy to see. Oak risers suit older farmhouses and give a warmer, traditional feel.

Do you also replace the stair railing?

We focus on treads, risers, returns and landing noses. If the railing is loose, we can tighten the newel post while we work and suggest a carpenter for a full rail.

What if a tread starts creaking later?

For twelve months, our stair work is guaranteed. If a tread we fitted starts to creak or shift, our carpenter returns to tighten it, and you won't see a bill.
