Treads, Risers and Nosing

Our sample ring holds four species, with both oaks plus maple and hickory. Each is cut thick and bullnosed, and a stained or painted riser closes in the step below.

Tread Samples at Home

Sample treads come to the estimate. Put one on the bottom step next to your hallway floor and compare stain colors right where the staircase meets the hall.

Quiet, Solid Steps

Mill houses in Hecla and Wheelockville rarely have straight walls, so after wobbly steps are screwed tight, each tread is traced and cut to fit.

One Year Stair Warranty

The carpenters building your stairs are licensed, insured and certified through the NWFA. A tread that shifts within a year brings us right back.

/ OUR SERVICES

Stair Carpenters in Uxbridge

From mill houses just below the Crown and Eagle Mill to colonials by Blissful Meadows, plenty of local stairs are still carpeted and creaky. Our carpenters peel off the carpet, lock down any loose step and build hardwood stairs with matching risers, frequently the same week you call.

Wood Stair Treads and Risers

A staircase in an 1820s mill house is not built like one in a new colonial. We go over wood choice, riser color and nosing size with you so the stairs fit your house.

Red Oak Treads

Red oak goes dark or light without blotching and suits the strip flooring found in many mill era homes.

White Oak Treads

For a front hall painted pale gray, white oak and its tight, cool grain is a clean fit.

Hickory and Maple Treads

Hickory has bold, busy grain and handles dents well, and maple gives a smooth, light look.

Painted or Wood Risers

White painted risers make dark treads stand out. For a single warm color, we stain oak risers to match.

Open Stairs and Return Ends

If one side of your staircase is open, we add mitered returns so the end grain of each tread stays covered.

Landing Treads

At the top, a wide landing tread finishes flush with the hallway, leaving no lip for a sleepy foot to catch.

Other Floor Work Around Main Street

Once the staircase looks right, many families keep going: new oak for the living room, LVP for a cellar along the Mumford, laminate upstairs, a refinish or one bad strip fixed.

Price of a new hardwood stair tread?

New hardwood treads run $60 apiece installed, or $50 to refinish an existing one. During the free visit our estimator counts the steps and writes down the total.

Will the stairs be closed for long?

Not during parts of the job. Glue and stain need time to set, so we plan the schedule with you, and if you only have one staircase we make sure you can still get to bed.

Is pulling the stair carpet included?

Yes. Off comes the runner, its padding, the spiky strips and the staples, then each bare step gets checked. The removal cost is listed in your estimate.

Can the stairs match my floors?

Our estimator brings sample treads and stain cans and sets them down at the bottom step, right against your hallway oak, so the two look like they belong together.

Why do my stairs creak?

Usually because a step has come loose from the stringer. We screw each step down tight ahead of the new hardwood, and the adhesive keeps them quiet.

Keep my old treads or replace them?

Refinishing runs $50 a step versus $60 for new hardwood. Solid oak without deep cracks usually makes refinishing the better deal.

How is stair work paid?

For installs, labor is paid when our carpenters arrive and wood is paid at delivery. Refinishing is billed in two halves, the first when sanding begins and the second once the top step is dry.

Do you guarantee the staircase?

Yes. We back stair carpentry for twelve months, and the lumber keeps whatever warranty its mill provides. A step that loosens or starts creaking gets fixed free.
