The Challenge

Kitchen islands are hard to sand around. The big machine can't reach the base, so the floor near the cabinets tends to look different from the rest of the room. The hall and bedroom doorways had the same tight corners.

Our Approach

We ran the big sander through the open areas and switched to an edger and hand scraper along the island and the doorways. Each spot got the same grit sequence as the field, so the color matches all the way to the cabinet base.

The Process

We cleared the rooms, taped the cabinets and sanded in three passes. After a full vacuum we looked over the edges with a lamp and touched up anything that showed. Then the finish, coat by coat.

Materials and Finish

Plain oak with nothing added for color. Three gloss coats bring out the grain and stand up to the kitchen's daily traffic.

The Result

The floor looks even from the island to the back bedrooms, with no dark ring around the cabinets. Morning sun runs across the boards and the whole first floor reads as one surface.
