Town
Brooklyn
The Challenge
The stairs and the entry floor meet at the bottom step, and that's where a color difference shows the most. The paneled walls also meant edges had to be sanded without touching the trim.
Our Approach
We hand sanded the stairs first, then matched the floor to them with the same grit sequence. Along the paneling the edger moved slowly, and the corners were finished with a scraper so no trim got touched.
The Process
We started on the stairs, then sanded the entry, the main room and the kitchen. After vacuuming twice, three coats of finish went on, working back toward the front door so no one had to step on wet floor.
Materials and Finish
Plain oak showing its amber tone, no stain, under three coats of our highest gloss.
The Result
The bottom step and the entry floor now look like one piece of wood. The high gloss picks up the white paneling, and the kitchen matches the rest of the house.
