Treads, Risers and Nosing

Pick oak, hickory or maple, every tread rounded at the front edge. We decide on wood and color together at the foot of the stairs, where you'll see it daily.

Tread Samples at Home

Our estimator brings actual sample treads in red and white oak, so you can hold them beside the upstairs hall floor and find a stain that ties both levels together.

Quiet, Solid Steps

Loose stringers get tightened and creaky steps screwed down first. Next, every tread is templated to its opening and set in construction adhesive before screws go in.

One Year Stair Warranty

Stairs here are built by NWFA certified people carrying a license plus insurance, with a year of protection on the labor. Any tread that starts to rock gets tightened.

Westport Stair Tread Installers

Staircases around here run from steep, narrow cottage stairs near Horseneck Beach to winding back stairs in old farmhouses along Main Road. We tear off tired carpet, stiffen any step that flexes and trace each tread so it meets the wall and stringer without gaps, so even an uneven old flight comes out tight and good looking.

/ RED OAK, WHITE OAK, HICKORY AND MAPLE

Wood Stair Treads and Risers

No two staircases in town are alike. A beach cape, a Victorian farmhouse and a new colonial each call for their own wood, riser paint and nosing shape.

Red Oak Treads

Red oak treads blend with the strip flooring found in so many older homes around Central Village.

White Oak Treads

White oak, with its tight grain and soft tan color, looks great in a bright beach house entry.

Hickory and Maple Treads

Hickory shows lively grain and stands up to heavy boots, while maple stays light and calm, both popular off Old County Road.

Painted or Wood Risers

Bright white risers give a crisp look, or stained oak risers can blend with the treads in houses near Head of Westport.

Open Stairs and Return Ends

On open sided stairs, mitered return nosings hide the end grain, a detail many older homes on Hixbridge Road need.

Landing Treads

A matching landing tread finishes the top step flush with the hallway floor, something we do often in homes by the Westport River.

Hallways, Bedrooms and Basements Too

Since we're already on site, it's easy to sand the hallway at the top, put oak in the bedrooms or lay vinyl in the basement at the bottom, all scheduled together.

What will new stair treads cost us in Westport?

Each new tread is $60 installed. Cottage stairs might have ten steps and a farmhouse flight fifteen or more, so the estimator counts yours during the free visit.

Can you redo steep, narrow cottage stairs?

Yes. Older beach cottages often have tight, steep stairs, and we template each tread to fit. Where codes allow, a slightly deeper nosing can make footing safer.

Are hardwood stairs slippery with sandy feet?

A satin sheen grips better than gloss, and a center runner adds traction. A mat at the bottom step also catches most of the sand before it gets carried up.

Can basement stairs get hardwood too?

They can. Cellar stairs are often rough framing, so we may add risers and skirt trim along with the treads. Vinyl treads are another option for damp basements.

Can we still get upstairs during the work?

Usually yes. A typical flight needs one or two working days, and we schedule the messy parts so bedrooms stay reachable. We'll warn you about any stretch when the stairs are closed.

Will hardwood treads end the squeaking?

Nearly always. Squeaks come from wood rubbing on wood or a nail that has backed out, so we tighten the framing underneath before setting a single new tread.

Can the stairs be stained to match our hall floor?

Yes. We stain a test tread right beside the hallway floor and let you look at it in your own light. Once you're happy, we stain the full staircase to match.

What happens if a new tread comes loose?

Stair labor carries our one year guarantee. If any tread we installed shifts or a nosing loosens, one of our installers resets it without charging you.
