Treads, Risers and Nosing
Carpet on old Northampton stairs often covers decent oak, or sometimes soft pine that really needs new treads. At the free visit we peel back a corner and tell you which it is.

Dark treads with white risers, natural oak all the way up, or pale treads rising from a marble entry: we test the stain on a spare piece first so you can see it.
Every step gets its own measurements, since staircases in older houses along Elm Street are seldom square. Each nosing and return is trimmed to sit snug.
Every staircase we finish in Northampton is backed for a year on labor, along with the tread maker's coverage. Brazil Floors employees, NWFA certified, do it all.

New oak treads are $60 apiece, fitted and stained in your color. If you'd rather keep the treads you have, we refinish them at $50 per step, with sanding and finish part of that price.
Yes. We strip off the carpet, the padding and every tack strip, then take a close look at the wood. Sometimes the oak just needs refinishing, and sometimes new treads are the better answer.
A lot of Northampton homeowners paint the risers white for contrast, while others have them stained to blend with the steps. We'll show you both options at the free estimate.
Typically a day or two, based on the stain and finish. We can also work on alternate steps, so everyone can still get upstairs to bed at night.
Yes. We try stain colors on leftover oak until one matches the hallway upstairs and the entry floor below, and nothing goes on until you approve it.
Brazil Floors staff do it, and each of them holds NWFA certification and is covered by our license and insurance. We never send subcontractors to a Northampton staircase.
Yes. Our labor on stairs is guaranteed for twelve months, with the tread maker's warranty covering the material. Should a tread come loose in that first year, we'll return to fix it.
The treads are paid for when they're delivered, and labor on the day installation starts. We don't ask for a large deposit weeks ahead, and the per-step price stays as quoted.
