Treads, Risers and Nosing

We cut replacement treads from red or white oak stock, each with a rounded bullnose, then stain them on the staircase so the climb from the mudroom matches upstairs.

Tread Samples at Home

Our estimator brings a couple of sample treads. Prop them on your bottom step, compare red against white oak in the light from the front door, and pick a stain from there.

Quiet, Solid Steps

A step that rocks gets glued, then screwed tight to the stringer. Next, each tread is scribed to walls that settled long ago, and that creak by step three disappears.

One Year Stair Warranty

Every staircase we touch carries a twelve month guarantee from our NWFA certified, licensed, insured installers, who drive back up Route 8 if a tread ever loosens.

/ OUR SERVICES

Stair Installers in Clarksburg

Our crews rebuild stairs in Middle Road farmhouses, Briggsville mill houses and capes near the Four Corners. We peel off the old runner, firm up every loose step, then scribe new oak treads to walls that were never quite square, and finally sand, stain and seal so they take snow boots for years.

Wood Stair Treads and Risers

Hill town staircases vary, from tight back stairs in an 1850s farmhouse to wide open ones in new homes, and our estimator talks through wood, riser color and nosing.

Red Oak Treads

Red oak drinks in stain nicely and suits the honey toned floors found in many older Clarksburg houses.

White Oak Treads

White oak shows a fine, cool grain that looks crisp against gray walls and fresh white trim.

Hickory and Maple Treads

Hickory, with its wild grain, stands up to muddy hiking boots, and maple stays pale and quiet next to white plaster.

Painted or Wood Risers

Risers painted bright white keep a farmhouse stair looking neat, or our crew cuts oak risers to go with the treads.

Open Stairs and Return Ends

Where the staircase is open along one side, a mitered return wraps each nosing around the corner, hiding the end grain.

Landing Treads

Up top, we add a landing tread at the final step or the midway turn of an old farmhouse stair, flush with the hall floor.

Floors, Sanding and Repairs in Clarksburg

Since the sanders are already in the house, ask about the hall at the top of the stairs too. We also lay oak or LVP in bedrooms, float laminate in cellars and patch strips scorched near a woodstove.

What will new oak treads cost for our Berkshire staircase?

A Clarksburg staircase gets new oak treads, each $60 per step, with nosing, stain and installation included. When the treads you already have are solid, a refinish costs $50 per step.

Will you take the old runner off our stairs?

Yes. Carpet, padding, tack strips and every staple get pulled. That removal price is settled at your free estimate, and pulling up flooring elsewhere usually costs near $1.00/Sq Ft.

When can the family climb the stairs again?

Plan on a couple of days, counting time for stain and finish to dry. Your crew lead tells you exactly when the stairs open again, and we work around any back stair your home has.

Can the new oak match our upstairs hallway?

Yes. We stain on site and test a sample against the landing before doing the rest, so the climb and the upstairs hall end up one shade.

Can you quiet a squeaky staircase?

Usually. Each loose step is glued and fastened to its stringer before new oak goes on, and in old farmhouses that typically ends the squeaks for good.

Refinish or replace: which do our treads need?

When the oak is sound and just scuffed, refinishing for $50 a step usually wins. Treads that are cracked, split or patched too many times are worth replacing at $60 per step.

When is payment due for stair work?

For new treads, labor is settled as our van pulls in and material once it is carried inside. Refinishing old treads is paid in two parts: one as sanding begins, one once they are sealed.

Is stair work guaranteed?

Yes. The licensed, insured crew who builds your staircase backs that work for twelve months, and oak we supply carries its own manufacturer warranty too.
