The Challenge

Dark stain is honest. It shows every sanding mark, every lap line and every spot where the wood took color differently. On a big open floor with windows on two sides, any mistake would show the minute the sun came in.

Our Approach

We sanded to bare wood, then did one extra pass with a finer grit so the stain would take evenly. Color went on by hand, one section at a time, and the stairs got the same stain as the floor.

The Process

Day one was sanding and cleanup. The stain went down the next morning after we made samples on the floor and the owners picked their color. Once it dried we rolled on three coats of finish, letting each one cure before the next.

Materials and Finish

Espresso stain on the floor and on each tread, white paint on the risers to match the trim and three gloss coats on top.

The Result

The floor reads as one deep color from wall to wall, with no streaks in the window light. Against the black railings and white walls, the house finally looks finished.
