The Challenge
Oak has a lot of open grain, and gray pigment tends to sink into it unevenly. The kitchen, the stairs and the living room all had to come out the same shade, under very different light.
Our Approach
We sanded to bare wood and kept the sanding consistent across every room. Then we made stain samples right on the floor, so the gray could be judged next to the cabinets and the walls before we committed to it.
The Process
Sanding, two rounds of vacuuming and a full wipe down came first. The gray went on by hand and was spread evenly, one area at a time. After it dried, three coats of satin went over it.
Materials and Finish
A gray picked from samples laid next to the cabinets, under three satin coats for a soft, low sheen.
The Result
The gray reads the same in the kitchen and the living room, with the grain showing through instead of blotches. The satin sheen keeps it modern and hides daily dust better than gloss.
