The Challenge
Older houses settle. The subfloor dipped near the front door and squeaked by the stairs, and new wood laid over that would have moved with it.
Our Approach
We screwed the subfloor down, planed the high spots and started from a chalk line off the longest wall so the rows would stay square through three rooms.
The Process
Rosin paper went down first, then strip oak with a pneumatic nailer. After a few days to settle we sanded, filled the seams and sealed it.
Materials and Finish
Two and a quarter inch select red oak, rosin paper underlayment and a satin water based finish.
The Result
The front rooms now read as one floor from the door to the dining room, quiet underfoot and the same warm tone the house always should have had.
