Stair Tread Refinishing and Floors in Pawtucket, RI

One staircase, one sunroom full of windows and a living area in between. The goal was simple: treads that match the floors and a sunroom that doesn't look like an afterthought.

The Challenge

Stairs can't go under a big sander. Every tread is sanded by hand, and the nose of each step wears faster than the middle, so it's easy to end up with uneven color. The sunroom gets light all day, which shows every flaw in the finish.

Our Approach

We hand sanded each tread and nose, then stained them to match the floor. The risers stayed white, which keeps the staircase from feeling heavy. In the sunroom we sanded the whole floor and kept the stain coat thin so the light wouldn't show streaks.

The Process

We started at the top step and worked down so nobody walked on wet finish. The floors got three passes and two rounds of vacuuming. Once the stain dried, treads and floors were coated on one schedule.

Materials and Finish

A medium brown on the treads and the floors, painted white risers and three coats of gloss sealing everything in.

The Result

The stairs and the floor now share one color, and the white risers make each step stand out. The sunroom shines in the afternoon light without a single streak.
