The Challenge
Dark stain and high gloss show every mistake. The treads also had to match the floor, even though they're sanded by hand and take color a little differently than the boards below.
Our Approach
We sanded the floor with a finer final grit to keep the stain even. Treads were hand sanded to that same grit, and we tested the color on both the floor and a tread before staining the whole job.
The Process
Sanding, a double vacuum and a tack cloth wipe came first. The stain went on by hand in small sections. After it dried, we rolled three coats of high gloss finish on the floor and brushed it on the treads.
Materials and Finish
A dark brown on the floor and every tread, finished in three high gloss coats.
The Result
The floor reflects the room like a mirror, and the treads match it exactly. The brown sits deep and level across every board, with no streaks showing in the light.
