The Challenge
Brick is a strong color, and a floor that's too red or too orange fights with it. The hall was narrow, and the doorways left little room for the machines, so color had to stay even in tight spaces.
Our Approach
We made samples on the floor right next to the fireplace so the brown could be judged against the brick. Once the color was picked, we sanded every room to the same grit, including the hall corners done by hand.
The Process
Two days of work before the finish. First sanding and cleanup, then the stain, wiped by hand in small areas. When it was dry, three coats went on, from the back bedroom to the front door.
Materials and Finish
A medium brown chosen from samples laid beside the brick, under three gloss coats.
The Result
The brown works with the brick instead of against it. The hall and bedrooms match the living room, and the gloss gives the floor a warm glow in the evening.
