The Challenge
Red oak has a pink undertone that can push gray stains toward purple if the color is not chosen carefully.
Our Approach
We tested four grays on the actual floor and mixed a custom blend with a touch of brown to cancel the pink.
The Process
After the final sanding pass the floor was water popped, stained by hand and sealed with a clear finish that does not yellow.
Materials and Finish
Custom gray stain blend, water popping and a clear water based finish.
The Result
The gray looks true in daylight and at night. It ties the kitchen cabinets and the living room together.
