Treads, Risers and Nosing
Red oak, white oak, hickory and maple treads travel on the truck to Berlin. Each measures a full inch in thickness and 11 1/2 inches front to back, carries a bullnose, and arrives with its own riser.

Tread samples come with the estimator. Hold them against your floor at the bottom step and the right wood is obvious.
Wobbly steps are screwed tight before anything else. Then the installer scribes every new tread, glues it and fastens it down.
Every Berlin staircase is built by Brazil Floors employees who hold the license, the insurance and the NWFA card, and the workmanship stays covered for twelve months. If a tread squeaks or a nosing shifts, we fix it on our dime.

A step in Berlin is $60. That one price buys the hardwood tread, the riser behind it, the rounded front edge, a stain matched to your floor and the crew that installs it.
Yes. We strip the carpet, pull the pad, pry the tack strips and draw every staple before the first tread goes on. What that removal costs is agreed during the estimate.
Sound oak gets hand sanding plus a new finish, $50 per step. A tread that has split, or worn thin along the nose, comes out and is replaced with new oak.
Yes. Stained oak risers that match the treads turn the whole run into one continuous wood tone, and painted white risers make each step read sharply against the oak. Both cost the same per step in Berlin.
On most Berlin stairs, yes. Any step that moves is screwed tight to the stringers before we start, and every new tread is glued as well as fastened so nothing rubs or creaks later.
A return piece is mitered onto each exposed end, carrying the bullnose around the side so the tread reads as one finished piece from the hallway.
Prefinished treads are a special order and can take weeks to reach Natick. Unfinished oak is in stock, so those jobs typically begin the next day and finish on the second.
Yes. If a step we built loosens or creaks within twelve months, we return to Berlin and correct it at no charge. The crew carries a license, insurance and NWFA certification.
