Solid Hardwood Floor InstallationIn Barrington, RI
Solid hardwood, nailed one row at a time
We cleaned and checked the subfloor, rolled out underlayment paper and set the first rows by hand. The rest went down with a pneumatic nailer, then we cut the edges around the hearth and added the trim.
An open plan shows every row. If the first line is off by a little, the gap grows across the room and you see it at the far wall. The new floor also had to meet the hearth and the doorways cleanly.
We snapped a straight starting line, laid the strips out dry to mix the lengths and shades, and only then started nailing. Every row was pulled tight before the next one went down.
The rows run straight from the front window to the far wall, tight at every seam and flush at the hearth. Afternoon light now crosses the whole room in one warm color.
