The National Wood Flooring Association has provided flooring for its 89th home through the Gary Sinise Foundation's Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment program, known as R.I.S.E., Floor Covering News reported. The program builds mortgage free smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders, each one fitted to the owner's needs.
The newest home was dedicated May 7 in Nashville for retired U.S. Army Capt. Leslie Nicole Smith, who volunteered to deploy after 9/11. Blood clots that spread through her body cost her left leg and her sight. NWFA president and CEO Stephanie Owen said the clots were believed to be linked to chemical exposure at mass grave sites.
NWFA member Middle Tennessee Lumber donated the real wood floors for the project. To date, 163 NWFA member companies have given product, logistics and installation services for homes across the country, with a total value of more than $7 million.
