Finished lumber prices are holding firm, RFD-TV markets specialist Tony St. James reported. The Madison's Lumber Price Index reached $524.55 per thousand board feet on September 11, up 1.2% for the week and 8.8% from a year earlier. Futures traded near $565 on September 15.
Futures were held back by weaker housing demand, ongoing trade tensions with Canada and higher mortgage rates that are limiting construction. Timber owners haven't seen the same gains. TimberMart-South reported second quarter pine sawtimber at $23.34 per ton, down $2.78 from a year earlier, and mixed hardwood sawtimber at $30.44, down $2.03.
Hardwood prices vary widely by region. In Pennsylvania, white oak averaged $727 per thousand board feet in the northeast part of the state and $750 in the northwest during the first quarter, while black cherry ranged from $412 to $848. The report tells landowners to read national prices as "direction, not a direct stumpage quote."
